Schemes and Programmes :
The Govt. Thoothukudi Medical College was started and functioning from 16.08.2000. In this college, non-clinical and clinical departments are functioning regularly. 100 students have been sanctioned for each Academic year from 2000-2001. DMLT Courses of two years duration and CMLT Course (Emergency Care Technician, Respiratory Therapy, Anaesthesia Technician, Theatre Technician and Orthopaedic Technician) of one year duration were started from 2005-2006 with the total intake of 100 students and 150 students respectively. CRA (Certified Radiological Assistant) Course was started from 2007.2008. In this Medical college, during this year 105 training students are undergoing (CRRI) internship and 55 students are trained for Diploma in Nursing Course.
In this college all the departments are functioning regularly. Ten Operation Theatres are available. Surgeries for GENERAL, ENT, EYE, DENTAL, ORTHO, UROLOGY, PAEDIATRIC, EMERGENCY, SEPTIC, FAMLY WELFARE, GYNAEC, CAESARIAN etc. are conducted. The medical equipments such as CT Scan, Ultrasonogram, E.C.G., X-Ray, Endoscopy, Sigmoidoscopy, Colonoscopy, ECHO, ETC, etc. are available. Central Laboratory and Blood Bank facilities are also available. All the services are provided at free of cost to people below poverty line.. An average of 2800 Out-patients and 590 In-patients are treated daily. An average of 465 deliveries, 630 major surgeries, 460 minor surgeries and 160 family welfare sterilizations per month are performed.
For more efficient functioning of the hospital, various buildings have been sanctioned by the Government. A new building for holding 500 beds has now been constructed at a cost of Rs.17.09 Crores. Totally, now 1112 beds are available. Equipments worthRs.10 Crores have been purchased as per the norms of Medical Council of India. A separate Paediatric block was constructed by Sterlite Industries, Thoothukudi. A new building has been constructed and utilized for Psychiatric department.
In this college, Voluntary Confidential Counselling and Testing Centre, Revised National Tuberculosis Programme, National Leprosy Eradication Programme and Ambulance & Mortuary Van facilities are available. One library for the utilization of Doctors and students is also functioning. 8000 books are available here. Recent edition text books are also available in this library. Separate hostel facilities for boys, girls and training students are also provided.
