The objectives of the Highways Department are to maintain repair and restructure the roads maintained by the highways department connecting to district headquarters, Taluk head quarters and other rural areas.

EXISTING ROAD SCENARIO :
The Divisional Engineer, Highways, C&M, Thoothukudi who is the District Head for Highways Department in Thoothukudi District, having 7 sub divisions under his control for maintaining of 1993.476Km length of roads in Thoothukudi District as detailed below.
- State Highways - 371.062 Kms
- Major District Roads - 293.772 Kms
- Other District Roads - 1328.642 Kms
To monitor and maintaining the roads in each sub division Road Inspectors and Gang Mazdoors are employed. They will initiate any immediate action to be done in the roads to the their superior officer.
Roads also will be repaired periodically under plan & non plan schemes. Under plan scheme Improvements of road works, widening and strengthening of roads, construction / Reconstruction of Bridges and Culverts are taken up according to the allotment given by the Government every year. Roads also improved under various new schemes announced by the government then and there.
Under Non Plan Scheme, routine maintenance of culverts, patch works, centre line marking, repairing of earthen shoulders, painting of sign boards and KM, HM Stones, etc. are being carried out.
